| Description | The route is not difficult and doesn’t require any special skills. But some reasonable horse riding experience is necessary for you to feel more comfortable when riding for several hours. Hiking and trekking experience is a plus. There will be horsemen-supervisors to help. On some steep ascents or descents it might be necessary to walk with the horse. We travel in a remote and unpopulated area, and we have to manage without the blessings of civilization.
Rafting will take 4-5 hours a day. The route for rafting isn’t difficult, class I-II whitewater rafting.
The weather in mountains changes rather quickly. There may be precipitation there. The day temperature is +10+30, the night 0 +10. The guide is able to change the programme because of the weather and the other troubles.

| Itinerary | Day 1 Arrive in Barnaul. A representative of «Len Alp Tours» meets you at the airport. Travel by bus to reach base camp «Vysotnik», which is situated in a picturesque place on the bank of the Katun river near the village of Tiungur ( 750 km, 10 hours). A «welcome» dinner.
The «Vysotnik» base camp (850 m) is owned by «Len Alp Tours». Accommodation is: in two-story wooden cottage, in rooms housing 1-2-4 people each; at camping for two with wooden beds and bed linen. Sauna and communal toilets are in a separate nearby building. There are also a café, a sports ground, a parking and a small hiking equipment rental center. Clothes and items not needed for the trek can be left at the check room.
Day 2 Transfer to the beginning of rafting to the Amur village. We start rafting down the Koksa River. The speed of current is not high and we can enjoy the scenery. We make the camp at the place which is very good for fishing. 20-25km, 4-5 hours.
Day 3 While rafting we pass the Tyuguryuk village. The current is faster and in about two hours we ride the Gromotukhinsky rapid (class 2). Some 40-50 min of rafting we close the Ust-Koksa village, where the Koksa River flows into the Katun River. We stay on a small island by Katun. 30 km, 4-5 h.
Day 4 In the beginning of the Uymonskaya valley the Katun forks and has many branches creating a labyrinth with total width of 1 km. We make a camp in the surroundings of the Multa village but still have some time for an excursion to the Roerich Museum. 30 km, Rafting 4-5 h.
Day 5 Rafting Multa – Tiungur. The speed of current is rather high. There are some small rapids. Dinner and overnight at the «Vysotnik» base camp. 30 km, 4-5 hours.
Day 6 Today we start our trekking on a horseback. Tiungur (850 m) – the Kuzuyak pass (1513 m) – the Ak-kem River (1000 m) - the Oroktoy brook (1100 m). The Kuzuyak pass climb is not technically difficult but it’s a test of our and horses’ stamina. Overnight at the mouth of the Oroktoy brook. 19 km, 5-6 hours.
Day 7 The Oroktoy brook - the Tukhman River (2000 m). We will be able to see the panorama changes from taiga - deep Siberian forest to high alpine meadows. Overnight at a picturesque place with great panorama of Mt. Belukha (4506 m), the highest mountain of Siberia, and surrounding peaks. 14 km, 6-7 hours.
Day 8 The Tukhman River – the Kulduairy Lake (2000 m) - the Tekeliu River (1800 m). We have to cover about 30 km today. At the beginning the trail we are following has the same height level and leads us to the picturesque Kulduairy Lake . We may have a chance to see a maral (a kind of deer) or a marmot. After a plateau with some weirdly shaped rocks and stones and then a short but steep descent we reach our campsite on the banks of the Tekeliu River. 30 km, 7-8 hours.
Day 9 The Tekeliu River - base camp «Ak-kem» (1950 m). After breakfast we are crossing the Tekeliu River and climbing the Sarybel pass. After a long ridge traverse and a steep descent we are coming to the Yarlu valley. Then we cross the Ak-kem River and in a half an hour we reach our permanent high camp. There is a canteen, a sauna and a traditional Altai building - ail (some kind of wooden yurt). 15 km, 6-7 hours.
Day 10 Base camp «Ak-kem» - the Karatiurek pass (3060 m). We leave our high camp and start the second part of our trekking climbing up the Karatiurek pass – it is really serious test of endurance for us and our horses. The descend from the pass is steep and goes on talus. 18 km, 5-6 hours.
Day 11 Gradual descent down the Kucherla River. We make a stop to look at the ancient petroglyphs on a rock. Return to the «Vysotnik» base camp. 38 km, 6-7 h.
Day 12 Travel to the city of Barnaul (750 km, 10 hours).
